Audio from NPR: "Two Women On Their Shared History Through American Slavery"

I was proud to be interviewed on NPR's 1A on WAMU on October 8th — even though for a shorter time than planned, as the technology failed partway through. However Karen carried on admirably and told the story of our connection, The picture below is of us sitting on the steps of Pickett House during our visit to Montgomery. The house belonged to my great great grandfather and we believe Karen's great grandfather was enslaved there.

Listen to the NPR audio interview here.

From WAMU: Some websites are helping the descendants of enslaved people learn more about their ancestry, including two women who met online and discovered a shared history. One, Karen Orozco Gutierrez, is the descendant of an enslaved man, Milton Howard. The other, Ann Banks, is a descendant of the Alabama man who enslaved him, A.J. Pickett.

Banks wrote about their story for Smithsonian Magazine.

This show was produced in partnership with Smithsonian Magazine.
